The Curing Refinement Protocol

From hay to gold: How to dry, cure, and preserve your harvest without losing the flavor.

Phase 1: The Trim

Wet vs. Dry Trim: The Great Debate

Before drying begins, you need to make a choice: Do you manicure buds wet (right after harvest) or dry (after 1-2 weeks of hanging)?

"Wet trim is for the impatient and mold-paranoid. Dry trim is for connoisseurs."

With dry trim, the sugar leaves dry around the bud and protect terpenes like a cocoon. The result is usually more aromatic.

  • Wet Trim: Remove all leaves immediately after harvest. Best in high-humidity environments.
  • Dry Trim: Hang whole plants. Only trim after they're fully dried.
  • Wear gloves! The resin sticks like superglue. Save the finger hash for later.

Phase 2: The Drying

The 60/60 Rule: Patience Pays

This is where most growers rush and ruin their harvest. The goal: remove surface moisture slowly while preserving internal moisture and terpenes.

"Slow drying is the foundation of everything. You can't cure what you've already destroyed."

Environment is everything. Get these numbers right or suffer the consequences.

  • Temperature: 60°F (15°C) is ideal. Never exceed 70°F.
  • Humidity: 60% RH. Use a hygrometer. No exceptions.
  • Airflow: Gentle circulation, but never point fans directly at buds.
  • Duration: 7-14 days minimum. Stems should snap, not bend.

Phase 3: The Sweat

Moisture Equalization: The First 48 Hours

When you first jar your buds, internal moisture redistributes to the outer layers. This is the "sweat"—and it's critical to monitor.

"The first 48 hours in jars tell you everything. Too wet? Back to drying. Too dry? It's over."

Use hygrometers in every jar. The numbers don't lie.

  • Jarring: Fill jars 75% full. Buds need room to breathe.
  • >70% RH: Too wet! Remove buds, dry for 2-4 more hours.
  • 62-68% RH: Perfect. Ready for burping schedule.
  • <55% RH: Too dry. Add Boveda 62% pack to rehydrate slowly.

Phase 4: The Cure

The Magic in the Jar: Weeks 1-8

Now the transformation happens. Chlorophyll breaks down, starches convert to sugars, and terpenes develop their full complexity.

"Curing is controlled decomposition. You're managing biology, not just waiting."
  • Week 1-2: Burp daily for 15-30 minutes. Smell for ammonia—that's bad.
  • Week 3-4: Burp every 2-3 days. Hay smell should be fading.
  • Week 6-8: Burp weekly or seal. Peak quality achieved.
  • Darkness: Store in complete darkness. Light degrades THC.

Phase 5: The Vault

Long-Term Preservation: 1-2 Years

Properly cured flower can maintain quality for 1-2 years. The enemies are light, heat, oxygen, and humidity fluctuations.

"Treat your harvest like fine wine. The right conditions, zero disturbance, and time."
  • Containers: Glass mason jars or CVaults with humidity control.
  • Light: Complete darkness. Use UV-blocking containers if exposed.
  • Temperature: 60-70°F (15-21°C). Cool and stable.
  • Humidity: 58-62% with Boveda or Boost packs.

Expert Corner: FAQ

Why does my weed smell like hay?
That's chlorophyll. It hasn't broken down yet because you either dried too fast or haven't cured long enough. Solution: More cure time. 4-6 weeks minimum for the hay smell to fully fade.
I smell ammonia in my jars. What now?
Ammonia means anaerobic bacteria—your buds are too wet. Immediately remove from jars, spread on paper, and dry for several hours. Re-jar and monitor closely. You may have caught mold starting.
Can I speed up the cure?
No. Chemistry takes time. Some people try heat or vacuum sealing—both degrade quality. The only "hack" is controlling your environment perfectly so the cure proceeds optimally. Patience is the price of quality.
How do I know when it's "done"?
The cure is technically never done—quality can continue improving for 6+ months on some strains. But the functional answer: when the hay smell is gone, smoke is smooth, and the jar smells like it should (the strain's true terps), you're there. Usually 4-8 weeks.
